James Street collection, 1917-1957.

The collection consists of a small group of manuscripts that consist mainly of letters written to Mrs. M.L. Connell of Wartrace, Tenn. who was one of Street's school-teachers. The letters discuss Street's novels, particularly Oh, Promised Land and In My Father's House, and contain general information about his work and his family. Of particular interest is a letter written to Mrs. Connell's daughter upon her graduation from high school, in which Street discusses his views of ambition, learning, happiness, success, and life in general, and then advises her to forget everything he said because she will anyway. Also included in the collection is a photograph of Street, inscribed to Frances Connell, and a tear sheet from The Saturday Review with a review, by John Temple Graves, of In My Father's House.
